Meadowlark Lake Wedding in Wyoming: A Western-Inspired Elopement with Friends

We’ve all heard the joke about the friend trip never making it out of the group chat… but that’s not how Dianna and Rem’s story starts.

A group trip for the ages, one that not only made it out of the group chat, but all the way to the mountains of Wyoming. Dianna and Rem’s Meadowlark Lake wedding wasn’t just about the two of them. It was about community, adventure, and the kind of memories you can only make when you bring your people along for the ride.

An Intentional Elopement near Buffalo, Wyoming

Dianna and Rem eloped in late June, when the Mountains in Wyoming are alive in the best way… wildflowers blooming, mountain air soft and warm during the day with a little bit of a cool crispness at night, and everything feeling just a little more possible. I gush about everything the area has to offer during a lot of different months, but late June might just be my favorite time there.

From the very beginning of their planning, Dianna and Rem knew what mattered most. “Peace and good company,” Dianna said when asked what was most important about their day, “We just want to have fun!” And they meant it.

Instead of a timeline packed with obligations, they created a day that felt like them, rooted in the things that built their relationship in the first place:

  • Hiking together
  • Long road trips
  • Being outside for as long as possible
  • Sharing meaningful moments with the people they love most

Wyoming was one of the first big trips Dianna and Rem ever took together, which made coming back here to get married feel almost poetic. A full circle moment to kick off the rest of their lives together in Wyoming with their Meadowlark Lake wedding.

Hiking to a Wedding Ceremony Above Meadowlark Lake

Unlike most traditional weddings, this wedding day didn’t start at an altar. It started at a trailhead.

With their closest friends (and a flute player in tow!), they hiked up into the mountains toward a rocky lookout overlooking Meadowlark Lake for their wedding ceremony. Hiking boots on, dresses flowing, laughter echoing through the trees, it felt less like a formal event and more like an experience unfolding in real time.

At the top, with sweeping views of Meadowlark Lake and mountains, surrounded by the coziness of the forest, one of their closest friends led their ceremony. Afterward, instead of heading to a reception hall, they stayed right there, exploring the rocky terrain, scrambling out to the perfect overlook, fully embracing the wildness of the place they chose to get married.

A Tailgate Elopement Picnic at the Trailhead

After hiking back down from the Meadowlark Lake overlook, the crew gathered around the tailgate of Dianna and Rem’s truck. A hearty spread of DIY sandwiches, snacks, and cold beer was the perfect post hike treat to fuel the rest of the day.

Keeping with the laidback vibes of the day, the group hung out in the shade for a while, chatting, eating, laughing, and just enjoying the moment. Our timeline for the day wasn’t rushed, no reservations to get to, with the sun creeping towards the horizon the only element of time we cared about.

“Oh my gosh! What can I say expect we had the most amazing experience! Our wedding day felt so magical and special thanks to our amazing photographers! They helped plan everything, making sure we where able to incorporate what mattered most to us. Tali and Dom where so kind and supportive throughout the whole day!”

A Western-Inspired Elopement with Cowboy Boots + Wildflowers

There was something effortlessly iconic about the way their day came together. We had taken Dianna and Rem’s engagement pictures a while back and I remember being so impressed with Dianna’s style. Practical and effortlessly chic, looking like she had literally walked off the pages of a Ralph Lauren magazine, so you can imagine the energy they brought to their Meadowlark Lake Elopement was nothing short of perfect.

Dianna in her dress, standing in a field of wildflowers. Rem in jeans and a cowboy hat. Both of them in cowboy boots, enjoying a care-free day as they commit their lives to on another. Although their style could certainly make many Pinterest boards jealous, it wasn’t curated for Pinterest, it was just them. And that’s what made it feel so right. It wasn’t something built around the latest trends or designed for the likes, just an honest reflection of the two of them and their relationship.

We wandered into a wide-open meadow for group photos, surrounded by wildflower blooms and mountain views, their entire crew gathered together in a way that felt more like a shared adventure than a posed moment. We snapped some photo memories of the moment, taking in the views and marveling at the perfect day Wyoming had given us.

Cake, Champagne, and a Creekside Celebration in the Forest

After the wedding ceremony overlooking Meadowlark Lake, the adventure didn’t stop. We scooted down the road to a perfect little forest clearing by a stream that Dom and I had scouted during one of our adventures in the area. (p.s. We have a full Bighorn Location Guide that we share with all of our booked couples eloping in the area to help them find the perfect spots with all the details you need to know to create your own perfect day.)

The whole group made their way into the forest, each person carrying a piece of the celebration… a carefully balanced wedding cake, champagne bottles, custom mugs for every guest (Dom and I even got our own mugs to join in the celebration!), and a picnic blanket tucked under someone’s arm for the bride and groom.

We made our way to the quiet clearing by a little creek and everything came together for a perfect elopement reception. Because honestly… wedding cake just tastes better in the woods.

A Sunset First Dance Near Tensleep, Wyoming

As the day wound down, Dianna and Rem carved out one more moment, just the two of them.

We headed out for a sunset hike near Tensleep, Wyoming, chasing that golden light that only shows up in the mountains at the end of the day. They brought a small speaker with them, and on a quiet rocky cliff overlooking the landscape, they shared their first dance.

They exchanged personal letters there, too. And in one of those small, behind-the-scenes moments that somehow becomes part of the story forever, Dianna surprised Rem with an engraved pocket knife. The “behind-the-scenes” bit of this moment was definitely one of those stories I’ll remember for a long time. Dianna wanted to give the pocket knife to Rem at the top of the hike when they exchanged letters, but didn’t want him to see it on the hike up and had no pockets to stash it herself. With a little creative thinking, she told me she needed help holding her dress in an outhouse. So we both shuffled into the little trailhead outhouse… which, turns out, was just a distraction so she could sneak the knife into my backpack for the hike up. Fully committed to the surprise!
